Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)

Mental Health First Aid is a training course initially produced in Australia in 2000.

MHFA England are licenced to provide training to instructors and then provide ongoing support and certification to the trainers and any individuals they train. It is a course designed to increase knowledge and awareness of mental health issues in participants and therefore equip them to recognise mental health issues in others and assist them to take appropriate action. This action can range from offering immediate support and signposting to recognising when someone is a danger to themselves or others and taking the appropriate action.

The MHFA England course is accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health and will meet employers’ first aid obligations, it may also assist companies to gain the ISO 15001 accreditation when their first aid and welfare provisions are audited.

There is now an emphasis on mental health provision within the workplace, work related stress, anxiety or depression accounts for over 50% of all working days lost to ill health in the UK (HSE 2018), also the World Health Organisation have now classified “Burn Out” as an occupational phenomenon.

The training of MHFA trained first aiders will assist in the early detection of problems and facilitate early intervention and help to reduce sickness absence levels.

The first aider course is a 2-day course and will be presented by 2 MHFA England trainers, Mark Webb who is a Registered Nurse and Occupational Health specialist and Peter Wink who is also a Registered Nurse and a Mental Health specialist. This combination of expertise combined with the course material will empower attendees to recognise and respond appropriately to issues arising in the workplace and also promote a positive attitude toward mental health amongst their colleagues.

MHFA can only add to the health and safety of the worker and the work environment, it will improve efficiency and productivity and make your company one others want to do business with.
